Leok? is a Hawaiian language telecommunications system that provides email, conferencing, real-time chat, file transfer, database access, and a number of other services in Hawaiian. It is based on the FirstClass Intranet Server system designed and sold by OpenText in Canada. All of the menus, dialog boxes, and communications on Leok? are in the Hawaiian language only.

Leok? is free to all students, teachers, support, and curriculum development personnel involved in the Hawaiian Medium Education programs, as well as any Hawaiian language professors or teachers who request access. It is also currently free to private, Hawaiian-speaking individuals. However, this policy may change with the release of the Windows client and our need to further enhance Leok?'s capabilities to support a large number of new users.

Leok? is available to anyone who speaks Hawaiian, and has access to a Macintosh or Windows computer with Internet capability. It also requires the installation of some specialized software which can be downloaded via the WWW.

Leok? is currently used by over 900 Hawaiian language speakers, most of whom are involved in the Hawaiian Medium Education programs ("Hawaiian Immersion"). This includes students from grades 1 though 12, support and curriculum development staff, university professors and students, the P?nana Leo preschools and offices, as well as private individuals and agencies.

Leok? is used for the online Hawaiian language classes taught by Ka Haka ?Ula O Ke?elik?lani and the ?Aha P?nana Leoki, Inc. You can learn the Hawaiian language in those classes, however, besides these class you must be able to speak Hawaiian before using Leok?.

No. All public and private communication between users of Leok? is to be in Hawaiian. English is only allowed when sending and receiving email via the Internet from non-Hawaiian speakers. The only exception to this rule is in our online Hawaiian language classes.
